DS2 file format

What is a DS2 file, and why won't it open?

DS2 is the Olympus dictation recorder format. It stores compressed voice recordings in a proprietary container that standard software cannot read. DS2Genie opens DS2 and DSS files directly and types them back as a finished letter, no conversion required.

The DS2 format, in plain language

DS2 stands for Digital Speech Standard 2, a compressed audio format developed by Olympus for professional dictation recorders. It replaced the older DSS format, which is itself a compressed voice format from the same family.

The format stores audio at a low bitrate optimised for speech rather than music. Files are small: a 10-minute dictation is typically 500 KB to 1 MB. Alongside the audio, a DS2 file carries embedded metadata: the recorder model, the date and time of recording, priority flags, and work-type codes your organisation may have set.

DS2 is a proprietary format. Olympus holds the codec specification. That is why standard media players, cloud transcription services, and most AI tools cannot open DS2 files without a licensed decoder.

Who uses DS2 recorders? Lawyers, solicitors, barristers and legal secretaries are the largest user group. Doctors, medical secretaries, insurance adjusters, surveyors and any professional who dictates letters and reports into a handheld recorder.

The recorders themselves are made by Olympus (now sold as OM System), Grundig (the Digta range) and some older Philips models. A DS2 file comes off the recorder as a .ds2 file. DSS files (older recorders) have the extension .dss.

Why DS2 files won't open in most software

The problem is not the file. It is the software people try to use.

  • Standard media players such as Windows Media Player and QuickTime cannot play DS2 files.
  • DS2 uses the Olympus proprietary codec, which requires a licence to decode.
  • Cloud transcription services built for phone recordings or podcasts typically reject DS2 files at upload.
  • Even some typing bureaus ask you to convert the file to MP3 first, adding a step and risking quality loss.

DS2Genie opens DS2 and DSS files directly.

Send the file as it came off the recorder. No conversion, no extra software, no Olympus DSS Player. We work from the original file and return the finished letter on your letterhead.

What you receive back

One job. Four deliverables by email.

  • The finished letter or report in Word format, on your firm's own letterhead or template.
  • A full verbatim transcript of the dictation.
  • A summary with the key names, dates and action points.
  • All of this delivered by email, usually the same business day.

DS2 to text, not DS2 to MP3

Most searches for "DS2 converter" are actually looking for transcription: the finished letter from the dictation, not just a different audio format. A DS2-to-MP3 converter gives you an audio file you then still have to transcribe yourself. DS2Genie takes the DS2 file and returns the typed letter, skipping the conversion step entirely.

If you do just need an MP3 from a DS2 file, the Olympus DSS Player software does that for free. But if you need the letter typed up, we are faster and the file format is not a barrier.
