About the Olympus DS-2500
The Olympus DS-2500 is a professional dictation recorder from the Olympus DS-2000 series. It is discontinued but widely used on the secondary market. Firms that adopted Olympus recorders a decade ago often still run DS-2500 units alongside newer equipment.
The DS-2500 saves dictation in DSS format, the original Olympus Digital Speech Standard. Files have the .dss extension. DSS uses proprietary compression, which is why most media players and transcription services cannot open the files directly.
